Schwartz Foundation Awards $2,500 Grant to Music & Youth

The Schwartz Foundation, an independent foundation that supports non-profits in Massachusetts, has awarded Music & Youth a $2,500 grant to support the Youth Leader Program. Through the Youth Leader Program, teens with outstanding leadership potential are hired to work in the Music Clubhouses as Clubhouse staff, teachers, and mentors. Participants develop valuable professional skills and experience personal growth and increased self-confidence.

One alumna of the Youth Leader Program recently shared that, “The Youth Leader Program changed the way I think and helped me grow as an individual. The program helped me develop communication and leadership skills and experience in the music industry. The most significant lessons I learned were keeping calm in times of stress and learning how to improve my time-management skills. These skills will definitely help me in the workplace and in school. Ever since I had the Youth Leader job where there were important deadlines, I feel that I am more prepared for future careers and projects that have deadlines and that I’m overall just a well-rounded person because of it. I just love how the Youth Leader program impacted me.”

Thank you to the Schwartz Foundation for continuing to make this program a success!

Youth Artists ON THE AIR!

On February 27, members of the Music Clubhouses of all the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston were honored guests at ZUMIX Radio 94.9 FM. After touring their facilities and recording studio, the youth musicians performed on the radio show!

Artists from each Club showcased their original music on air and then answered question about their creative process, current inspiration from other artists, and how the Boys & Girls Club has impacted their lives.

Music Clubhouse Director Wins Prestigious Award

Congratulations to Dawnmarie Salmons, Music Clubhouse Director at the South Boston Music Clubhouse, who has won the 2017 Light of Dawnn Award!

Dawnmarie is truly deserving of this honor. The South Boston Music Clubhouse is thriving because of Dawnmarie’s unwavering commitment to the youth, her creative approach to teaching music, and her palpable enthusiasm. Her background in music therapy has also made possible a successful inclusion program at the South Boston Music Clubhouse.

The Light of Dawnn Award “celebrates individuals working in the nonprofit sector who demonstrate the spirit of Dawnn Ashley Jaffier.” Dawnn Jaffier was a young woman who was devoted to nonprofit youth work in her community before she died tragically as a result of gun violence in 2014.

Sharing the Stage With Olympians

On January 28, Kiara of the Yawkey Music Clubhouse attended the New Balance Track & Field Grand Prix at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury, MA. But she wasn’t a spectator. She got to sing the National Anthem in front of hundreds of people, including the many Olympic athletes who were there to compete that day.

“It was a great experience for Kiara and for all of us!” says Music Clubhouse Director Daniel P.
