Music builds Community... one note at a time!

Boston, MA, November newsletter 2011

On Saturday November 19th 2011, teens from all nine Clubhouses took part in a collaborative workshop hosted by Music & Youth Initiative at the Lawrence Music Clubhouse.

Over 60 students from Boston, Lawrence, Everett, and Lynn MA participated in the event which included 6 workshops (taught by Clubhouse directors) followed by an open jam session! Students were able to attend two of the six workshops which included:

   Guitar Workshop
   Vocal Workshop
   Piano Workshop
   Rhythm Section Workshop
   Professionalism Workshop
   Recording Studio Workshop

The interactive workshops were designed to engage the students with fun, practical activities as well as give students a chance to meet Clubhouse participants from other neighborhoods and communities.

After a brief lunch break, students were able to apply what they just learned in a inter-Clubhouse open jam session. Students took to the stage and took turns playing the guitar, bass, drums, piano as well as singing their favorite riffs and tunes. The improvisational jam session went on for an hour exciting the crowd with a mix of blues, funk, rock and popular songs!

Students returned to their respective Clubhouses with new skills to better themselves as a musician as well as a greater sense of community... MUSIC was the common thread that brought the teens to the workshop but they left new friends, ideas and confidence to continue to practice and grow as young adults.
